DIY Heart-Shaped Tea Light Candles

DIY Heart Tea Candles

As I’ve grown older, I’ve gotten more into the idea of a personal and intimate Valentine’s Day. I like to think if you’re celebrating it romantically, then it’s a day when you should turn off your phone, put away your laptop and focus on your relationship. If you’re anything like me, you probably enjoy a more relaxed Valentine’s Day celebration. We always stay in — opting for a movie and game night with take-out food. As much as I would favor this over a night in a busy restaurant, staying in and playing Scrabble can feel a bit like you’re losing some of the romance!

It’s my opinion that the little details can make all the difference. Add dimmed lights and a few candles and you’re setting the scene already. I’ve made these cute, heart-shaped tea light candles to scatter around our table this year. They’re so quick and easy — you can whip them up in time to add a little more romance to your night in, too! —Fran

Supplies

    • Wax (I’ve used soy wax)

    • Heart-shaped cookie cutters

    • Colored wax crayons

    • Wick and wick tabs

    • Ziplock bag

    • Popsicle sticks or a clothes peg

Steps

Step 1: Cut a piece of wick to twice the depth of the cookie cutter. Thread it through the hole in the center of the wick tab and squeeze the hole flat using pliers. Place the cookie cutter on the ziplock bag and center the wick in the heart shape.

Step 2: Use popsicle sticks or a clothes peg to hold the wick in place. This will stop it from floating away when you pour the wax.

Step 3: Melt the wax using either a heat-proof glass bowl over a pan of hot water or in a microwave-safe container. If you’re using a microwave to melt the wax, heat for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until the wax is all melted. Mix in color using the wax crayons. Either shave pieces in or stir the crayon into the wax. The color will be very opaque when the wax has set, so if you want pastel colors, create a strength of color similar to these images below. If you want something bolder, add more color!

Step 4: Holding the cookie cutter in place, pour the wax into the space between the sticks. Ensure the wick is still centered and leave to set. Once it’s ready, it should be easy to peel off the plastic and push out of the cutter.

Now you have your heart candle! Make sure to burn these candles on a heat-proof plate or candle stand and be aware that the wax might run as you burn them down.
